Nearly everyone has a cell phone. And if you’re like me, you have a ton off apps on it. I have anything from games to my banking. Cell phones today are basically pocket sized computers that you can also call someone with. There are several good apps that will track your position while riding your bike. We’ll do a full review of bike gps apps in the near future. This article will cover some of the OTHER apps we use while out for a ride. Here are 5 apps for the iPhone that might be of use.
Instagram:
Sure, your phone already comes with a camera. Why do you need another one? The neat thing about Instagram is that it syncs up with Strava and any photo taken during your ride will be displayed on your Strava ride page. It’s a fun way to document your ride.
Fountain Finder/Oasis Places:
Have you ever been out on a ride and reach for your bottle only to find out its empty? Either you left home and forgot to fill them or it’s just one of those Palm Springs summer days where two bottles just aren’t enough.
These two apps do basically the same thing. They direct you to the nearest drinking fountain. If you find a fountain that’s not listed, add it to the growing database

Roadid:
The Road ID App is a great tool for runners, cyclists, hikers, walkers and basically anyone not glued to their couch. With features like eCrumb Tracking, a Stationary Alert, and a custom Lock Screen creator, the Road ID App is a fairly useful tool. With the ability to track your workouts in real time, your friends and family can stay better connected whenever you head outdoors…delivering peace of mind like never before.
Lock Screen: Customize your phone’s Lock Screen to provide vital information to First Responders in the event of an accident or injury, even if your phone is locked.
With the Lock Screen Creator, you can provide:
- Name
- City and State
- Three Emergency Contacts
- Important medical information (allergies, medical history, blood type)
Bike shops north America:
New in town and not sure where the local bike shops are or traveling and not familiar with the area and need some work done? Bike shops north America is a database of known bike shops and displays them in either a Google pin map or tabular list. Address, phone distance from you current location is given. Bike Shops North America helps you find bike shops in Canada and USA. You can search for bike shops by current location, by address, or by zip code.
MusicForSport:
One of my favorite podcasts to listen to while on a ride was Velobeats. Velobeats was music geared towards cyclists. The music was tuned to match a typical cyclists heart rate. Well, it seems like the folks at Velobeats have let the project die. There hasn’t been a new podcast in several months. A decent alternative is MusicForSport. Once you select a playlist from your available music, the app adjusts the bpm to a preset speed based on 5 sports related categories from Pilates to Cycling (60 – 160 bpm).
